Wilder is a name that dates back to the Wilder Station, a railroad station built for the Louisville, Cincinnati, and Lexington Railway in the middle of the 19th century. Wilder was once called Leitch’s Station. It was the first settlement established in Campbell County. Newport Steel now owns the property where “Wilder Station.” It is home to alleged hauntings at Bobby Mackey’s Music World honky-tonk and country music nightclub, which has also been called the “most haunted nightclub” in America.

According to the 2000 census, the city had 2,624 residents, 1,162 households, and 743 families. 707.8 people lived per square mile (273.1/km2). At an average density of 323.7/square mile (124.9/km2), there were 1,200 housing units. 94.51% of the population was White. There were 0.11% Native Americans, 1.56% Asians, 0.53% from other racial groups, 0.99% from more than one race, and 2.29% African American. The population was 0.95% Hispanic/Latino of any race.

1,162 households were found, with 28.1% having children under 18 years of age, 49.5% being married couples, 12.4% had a female householder without a husband, and 36.0% non-families. 31.2% of all households consisted of individuals, and 7.1% were made up of someone 65 years old or older. The average household size was 2.26, and the average family size 2.85.

The city’s population was distributed with 23.0% of the population being under 18 years old, 7.2% of those aged 18-24, 35.2% of 25-44, 23.3% of 45-64, 23.3% of those aged 45-64, and 11.3% of those 65 years or older. The median age was 36. There were 82.3 males for every 100 females. There were 80.5 males for every 100 females over 18 years old.

The median income of a household was $49 567, and that of a family was $65,089. The median income for males was $42,380, while the median income for females was $35,230. The city’s per capita income was $27693. The city had a per capita income of $27,693. This included 7.0% of the population and 5.9% of the families.
